The opposite of addiction is not just sobriety, it is living life unchained, it is connection, it is wellness, it is clarity of mind and purpose.

Addiction enslaves us, it causes us to isolate ourselves, both mentally and physically. It causes us to lock ourselves into boxes, unhealthy habits and patterns, constantly luring us back to itself and away from healthy habits, friendships, and life-giving activities.

Part of the goal of this book is to help you break out of these boxes, and create good habits to replace the bad ones, good (healthy) friendships to create replace the negative ones, and to address the parts of your mindset that keep leading you to return to destructive habits.

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer[a] is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. 2 Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. 3 If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.

4 Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. 5 For we are each responsible for our own conduct.” -Galatians 6:1-5:

Application Goals

Is there a low competition sports team, a program, or even a gym that you could join to start working on your physical health? Some people join martial arts, some start mountain biking, hiking, skiing, water sports, hitting the gym more, spinning, or joining a team. Physical exercise gives our bodies the same type of dopamine release that drugs do. It can actually feel just as good to exercise as it does to smoke or drink, but it creates health in our bodies instead of lethargy and sickness. It generates a similar dopamine release without the addictive consequences and negative side effects.
